LEGOLAND – California is hosting the US Open … and I’m jealous!

FIRST LEGO League Open Championship – North America
May 20 – 22, 2011
Carlsbad, California

When I first heard that LEGOLAND – California was hosting this year’s North America FLL Open Championship Tournament, I was jealous! I’ve never been to this legendary ‘So Cal’ amusement park even though I live in the same state. For the 76 North American FLL teams invited to attend, this location promises to offer a truly amazing experience.

Lynn Crockett, who is both LEGOLAND’s Education Programs Manager and the FLL Operation Partner for Southern California/LEGOLAND , filled me in on the details:
” LEGOLAND has been a host and sponsor of FLL for the past 12 years and has grown our regional FLL program from one Championship in a parking lot, to a  year round system with 8 Qualifying Tournaments in 4 counties, 2 coach’s workshops, 3 post season tournaments, 1 Regional Championship, and 2 JrFLL events. We are very excited to be hosting our first FLL North American Open.”

Opened in 1999, LEGOLAND – California is located in Carlsbad and is the third park of its kind to open worldwide, and the first to be built outside of Europe.  According to Lynn, Championship attendees will have full access to the park’s more than 60 rides, shows and attractions – including a visit to the adjacent SEA LIFE Aquarium and the LEGOLAND Water Park.

In sight of the Pacific Ocean, the park is just 35 miles north of San Diego and close to world famous attractions like SeaWorld, San Diego Zoo, the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier and the Birch Aquarium at Scripps.

So, who are these 76 lucky FLL teams? Invitations have been sent to every North American FLL partner, who have been asked to recommend one team from each region. Countries represented will include Canada, United States, Mexico and Puerto Rico.

Competing in the land of LEGO will definitely be a blast … is there any wonder I’m green with envy!
