“Don’t put that in your mouth. You don’t know where it’s been”

Maybe your mom, dad or some other adult figure has uttered this phrase to you during your life. Chances are when they said this they weren’t talking about fruits and vegetables.

However, just because fruits and vegetables are good for you, doesn’t mean they can’t harm you. Literally hundreds of hands touch the fruits and vegetables in your home and non-organic fruits and vegetables typically are covered with pesticide residue.

So how do you ensure your fruits and vegetables are clean and safe to eat?
Simple, wash them with this these four simple steps.

1. Fill a large bowl with cool or cold water. For extra cleaning power add a couple tablespoons of baking soda.
2. Place your produce in the mixture and allow them it to soak for five to 10 minutes. It is important that your produce is completely submerged.
3. Use a vegetable brush to scrub the dirt from produce with thick skin or a porous texture. Other produce can be rubbed gently with you hand.
4. Dry and enjoy.

Here are a few extra tips:

  • Some produce such as raspberries should not be soaked in water. Put fragile produce in a colander and spray it with distilled water.
  • Do not rewash packaged products labeled “ready-to-eat,” “washed” or “triple washed.”
  • Once cut or peeled, refrigerate as soon as possible at 40ºF or below.
  • Do not purchase cut produce that is not refrigerated.
