A rookie FLL team and their Food Factor season - Part 1
By- Heidi Buck
Seven years ago, my son was a new FLL team member on a rookie team during the Ocean Odyssey season. His team’s number one objective was to successfully complete the hardest mission on the mat. At their local qualifying tournament, the team won no awards and were not selected to move onto the next level, but they did achieve their goal! They lifted the submarine off of the platform and placed it on the water. They were ecstatic, to say the least (even though their scores ranked them 19th out of 23 teams) and were inspired and excited enough to continue to learn and grow with FIRST over the next 5 years.
Recently I met another rookie team with a similar experience, and they reminded me of that same lesson: What we learn is more important than what we win!
The Cyborg Donuts are a team of 5 from Placerville, California, situated in the foothills of the Sierra Mountains. They all attend Mountain Creek Middle School, and are all new to FLL except for one team member.
The team documented their first season with an amazing video that really captures their enthusiasm and passion for FLL. Watching it, I can again see that the goal of FIRST is to ‘Inspire’ and ‘Recognize’ STEM. This team’s success with a certain refrigerated truck is – and should be – both.
… and I can’t wait to see what great things they accomplish next.
