We love it when our veteran teams share what they know to the benefit of the larger FIRST® LEGO® League community. The Mann Master Builders from Union, Kentucky, USA, were semi-finalists last season for the FLL Global Innovation Award, presented by XPRIZE. Knowing that many rookie teams struggle with settling on a decision-making process, they shared how they do it. It’s not the only way, of course, but it has worked for them.
A Simple and Effective FLL Decision-Making Process
by The Mann Master Builders
Whether deciding how to tackle a robot mission or creating an innovative solution for the FLL Project, this simple and effective step-by-step process will help your team make the best decisions.
- Brainstorm Solutions – Let the team be creative and the ideas flow. Resist the temptation to evaluate the solutions just yet.
- Develop Criteria– Criteria are the factors you will use to analyze and evaluate the solutions.
- Rate Solutions Based on Criteria – Make a grid with the solutions as rows and the criteria as columns. Rate each criterion for each solution on a scale of 1-10.
- Make a Decision – Add up the criterion ratings for each solution. Choose the solution with the highest total. See example below.
Finally, FLL Core Values should be at the heart of the decision-making process. For more information about incorporating core values into your meetings, don’t forget to register for our Ask an Expert Webinar on Monday, September 28, at 5 p.m. ET. Register here.
